Kirsty's Reflections on 365 Days & Counting ...

When the decision was made that we would be working from home, nobody knew how long it would last. I thought maybe a month or two at home would be quite nice… never in a million years did I think I would still be at home a year on!

But it was the right thing to do, and I’m really grateful for the no-risk approach ICE has taken during the pandemic. It’s been really reassuring that we have taken every measure to keep each other and our families safe.

I remember the first few weeks feeling strange and there was so much uncertainty in the world. But at work there was a sense of hope and positivity. We were all very open sharing stories and how we felt, I never felt alone. We had regular video updates from team providing clarity and general updates. This was so important and is something ICE have kept up to this day.

Throughout the year like most, my routine has varied from getting up early and doing exercise to other days struggling to get out of bed, that snooze button has been hit a lot. I never used to be a snooze person, but some weeks have been tough, really tough. The hopes of being able to see family and friends and then being disappointed was like being on a crazy rollercoaster that I really wanted to get off.

Anybody who knows me, knows that I’m not really one to ‘chill’ at weekends. I love having plans and would normally have fun-filled weekends pretty much every week. I like being busy, even in the week. My nan has been coming over for tea every Tuesday for as long as I can remember, I really miss those weekly catch up. Luckily, technology and random acts of kindness have kept connections running and memories made.

I do have to admit that having no choice of the matter and really slowing down this past year has been nice. I’ve learnt that I do enjoy a different kind of weekend now, cooking, going for walks, bike rides and that general life admin.

#1YearOn from when home working started, ICE very kindly gave us a #ResilienceandRecognitionDay on the 15th March to rest, relax and take a breath after a whirlwind year. We’ve been extremely lucky at ICE that we’ve been busy throughout the year and having a day to reflect and rest was great and really needed. Having the time to reflect has driven me to get myself back into a good routine and I’m glad to say today was the first day and I did it! So, here’s to tomorrow!
