Leading Through Uncertainty Starts with Mindset

Artboard 2 (4)

Uncertainty is unavoidable. As a leader, you need to be prepared to lead your team through uncertainty, yet doing so is as much about you and getting in the right mindset yourself.

Here are 7 tips to help you create a powerful mindset:

  1. Embrace the discomfort of not knowing. Move from a 'know-it-all' to a 'learn-it-all' mindset. You don’t need to have all the answers, in fact it’s certain you won’t have all the answers.
  1. Distinguish between "complicated" and "complex" issues. They require different solutions. We get caught up in complicated thinking and complication often holds a lot of noise. Here is a way to break it down.
  1.  Think good enough, don’t let perfectionism hold you in a freeze state. Instead, aim for progress, expect mistakes and recognise that you have the ability to continually adapt and change course as needed. Use progress to learn from and think “just culture”, openness to experience, creativity and the discipline of delivery.
  1.  Resist the urge to oversimplify and come to quick conclusions. Take a disciplined approach to understanding both the complexity of the situation and your own biases. Einstein told us to "make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler". Think twice - act once.
  1. Don’t go it alone. Connect with your people who have their own set of experiences and perspectives to draw from. Many brains make lighter work, more divergent thoughts create better solutions. Create buy in and increase energy to deliver.
  1. Take the view from the mountain top. Taking a broader view to complex situations can really help reveal unseen and unexamined contexts and assumptions that would otherwise be invisible.
  1. Engender hope and optimism for yourself and then for others. The 7th and greatest mindset for me is both the first and the last. People are prewired to being highly sensitive to loss and the fear of loss, It is unsurprising that one of the first causalities when uncertainty looms large is hope. People can’t see the future clearly; they don’t understand how they can influence it. Focus on what is good, is still working, is worthwhile, and on what you can influence. Be proactive in dealing with, coping with, responding to or interacting with the situation, as we describe above.

"Cultivating leadership is a critical element of an organisation’s future. ICE partners with you to accelerate your strategy and business results by unlocking the leadership potential in your organisation.  Our programme design is embedded in the mantra “Those who create own, those who own use, those who use, change”.

"Because we know that leaders across the whole organisation, not only individuals, need to take responsibility for moving the organisation forward, we use a range of innovative tools and techniques to facilitate this level of ownership and engagement."
