RSV vaccination for older adults in England: what changes from 1st April 2026

                h,,mh

From 1 April 2026, the NHS RSV vaccination programme is expanding to include everyone aged 80 and over, and all residents in care homes for older adults. This builds on the existing offer to those turning 75.

Why we think this change is important

Through our training and community engagement, the most common question we hear about the RSV programme is: “Why aren’t over‑80s offered it?”

The programme began by focusing on people turning 75 while real‑world evidence was gathered. However, many people did not understand the decision of why we only introduced the programme to 75-79 year olds. This led to many people in the community being sceptical of the vaccine and worrying about the risks, with comments such as:

“Is it not for people 80 and over because it’s not safe?”

“Is it that important to have if we don’t give it to all our elderly community like other routine vaccinations?”

Recent data shows strong, early real‑world results from the RSV programme so far.

Last winter, RSV‑related hospital admissions among 75–79‑year‑olds fell by about a third after the programme started. We need to use this knowledge to support our communications within our communities.

Ensuring across all communications we are clear as to why eligibility has been extended in order to support people to make an informed decision on the RSV vaccine.

Important aspects to include in our future communications

  • It’s a single‑dose one off RSV vaccine.
  • People who are eligible for the spring COVID‑19 vaccination, will be able to have both at the same appointment, making it simpler and more convenient.
  • Last winter, RSV‑related hospital admissions among 75–79‑year‑olds fell by about a third after the RSV programme started.

If you’re struggling with RSV uptake we can help

We can support your communications, creating targeted social media content and toolkits for online channels, and equipping staff with practical, compassionate conversation techniques for discussing vaccinations with residents, patients, and families.
