79% of people we supported in 2018/19 became more physically active by at least 30 minutes, with the majority of these referred onto other pathways such as weight loss.
In general as a population we are moving less , especially the older we get – which is linked to rising obesity rates. Nearly a third of all adults in the UK are now classified as obese and 20% of year 6 children – with prevalence rates doubling in the most deprived areas compared to least deprived.
Most people don’t understand the impact of being physically inactive on their overall health and wellbeing. Insufficient physical activity is a key risk factor for noncommunicable diseases such as CVD, cancers and diabetes being responsible for one in six UK adult deaths (equal to smoking) and is estimated to cost the NHS £0.9 billion annually.
