Hope, Hopelessness and Despair.
We need hope like we need air, to live without hope risks suffocating on hopelessness and despair. Without hope we risk being crushed by the belief that there is no way out of what is holding us back. No way to move forward and reach our potential as individuals and teams.
“Demanding jobs do not necessarily make us sick, but demanding jobs that give us no agency over what we do or the way we do it are quite likely to.” (Shell, 2018).
Hope is not what most of us think it is. It's not a warm fuzzy emotion filling us with a sense of possibility. Hope is a way of thinking. It's a cognitive process and it is the fuel that helps us stay motivated and committed to deliver. Yes, emotions play a role, but hope is made of what researcher C R Schneider calls a trilogy of Goals, Pathways and Agency.
When we experience hope, we have the ability to set high performance stretch goals. We have confidence that larger goals are achievable and have clarity to communicate those goals.“I know where I want to go next”.
When we have hope in our way of thinking we can figure out how to achieve those goals, including the ability to stay flexible, and develop alternative paths. “I know how to get there.”
A high sense of agency, we become persistent, and can tolerate disappointment, ready to try new paths, again and again. We believe in ourselves. “I can do this” and are ready to reset and re-stretch our goals.
We need hope. Like we need AIR, measuring it begins with Agency.
